By the way when flagging emerged it was less about safety and more about noisy dark leather bars and clubs and cruising culture. In the 70s and 80s people who were flagging dressed in pretty obvious leather gear, so it wasn't about passing unnoticed.

I'm also curious about when actual carabiners became commonly available.. in the 90s I remember using other kind of key clips (and even fashioning some out of hardware store bits and pieces) but it seemed like carabiners only came in later when people got into rock climbing?
that's a good point, i'd also like to know more about the transition between key rings, generally speaking, and carabiners. there's so little research on the topic i didn't encounter much discussion about the distinction between the two terms.
