Hello, and welcome to the first solo version of this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet! You’re reading Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe! A lot has happened this week, so let’s get on with it.
First, Megan Fox and Adriana Lima flirted on Instagram, and several people lost their minds. Apparently, they are planning a date at Nobu. (I have not yet received confirmation that this date actually occurred, but I am waiting with bated breath).
Marvel’s vice president of film production has said there is more LGBTQ+ representation coming to the MCU. In her own words, “we’re not going to nail it in the first movie or second movie or third movie, or the first show or second show, but we will do our best to consistently try to represent.” This is hilarious, because not only should it not be that hard to put gay people in your movies, they’ve already done a bad job in the several instances in which they’ve tried. Let us not forget the “first gay character in a Marvel movie” debacle in Avengers: Endgame, or the time they queerbaited us with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnorak. (Not to mention Captain Marvel’s new “not lesbian” haircut in Endgame). Do better!
In my favorite news of this week, Colombian singer Shakira inexplicably changed her Twitter icon and header to what looked like a blurry version of the lesbian flag. It turns out it was promo for her new single and music video “Don’t Wait Up” and her Twitter header now reflects this, but it was a bright, hilarious moment while it lasted. (I also feel compelled to note that she appears to be literally surfing in the ocean in the music video, which is not necessarily gay – unless you count Blue Crush – but is very cool).
In Emmys news, Pose star MJ Rodriguez made history when she became the first trans actress to be nominated for best actress in a drama series. MJ’s reaction to the nomination, which includes her mother’s overjoyed exclamations of “YOU DESERVE IT,” is worth watching. There were various other notable nominations – the expected (The Crown getting like 100 nominations) the less-expected (Mare of Easttown’s Julianne Nicholson and WandaVision’s Kathryn Hahn getting nominated), but MJ deserves all the flowers right now.
In sports news, WNBA player Courtney Williams and her wife posted these incredible photos the other day that blew up in the internet. Green never looked so good.
If you’re looking for something to read this week, I would recommend this piece by Marlowe Granados about our contemporary understanding of bimbos. I particularly loved the below section about Laura Mulvey’s theory of the Male Gaze, which tends to be both overused under-theorized in contemporary discourse.
In movie news, Cannes took place last weekend, and the big news from the festival is that french director Julia Ducournau won the Palme d'Or (the festival’s biggest prize) for her film Titane, making her the first woman director to ever win that award solo. (Jane Campion won the award in 1993 for The Piano, though she technically shared the prize with director Chen Kaige who also won that year). Julia Ducournau also happens to look like this ⬇ if that makes you feel any differently.
In TV news, a new lesbian reality show called Tampa Baes has just been announced. The show will air this fall on Amazon Prime, and apparently “takes place over one, dramatic hot girl summer.” This is not entirely unprecedented, as The Real L Word did run for a whole three seasons, but the idea of an all-lesbian reality show is still a fairly novel idea. I’m sure it will be incredibly messy, and obviously, I will be tuning in.
Lastly, check out this list of sapphic movies for summer 2021. Some of these I have seen and can vaguely vouch for, others are just coming out and therefore I cannot. (If you don’t have access to any of these films, just go watch Rachel Weisz controlling pigs in Black Widow).
That’s all for this week, folks! Stay tuned for the next installment. I will leave you with this GIF of Rachel Weisz black-widowing in Black Widow.
