dispatch from all the lesbians at the olympics
and something about WHO is rachel weisz kissing???
Welcome to this week’s dispatch from the lesbian internet, a mid-week news roundup from Paging Dr. Lesbian. If you like this type of thing, subscribe.
Let’s start with the multitude of news items that have come out of the Olympics this past week. After losing to Canada, (who went on to win Gold), the USWNT defeated Australia to win the bronze medal. The most exciting moment of the game occurred when purple-haired lesbian Megan Rapinoe scored a goal directly from a corner kick, a feat that rarely ever occurs in soccer. In other soccer news, a picture of the US’s Kristie Mewis and Australia’s Sam Kerr after the game was circulating with captions like “A US soccer player sweetly consoled Australia’s top star.” This is hilarious because, dear reader, they’re lesbians. Perhaps to combat this oversight, or perhaps because she was just feeling gay, Sam Kerr then posted this photo of the two kissing (on the mouth) to her Instagram page. As someone put it on Twitter, gays EXIST.
Because we are blessed, apparently, this wasn’t the only gay moment at the Olympics this week. After the US Women’s Basketball Team won gold (making iconic lesbians and BFFs Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi the first-ever basketball players to win FIVE gold medals), Megan Rapinoe “sweetly” (as news media would put it) kissed her on the court. Gays stay winning.
I’m more Olympic news (I’m sorry there’s a lot), the IOC has suspended the investigation into Raven Saunders’ podium pose (which I spoke about last week) following the death of her mother. This is such sad news and I hope the IOC will just leave her alone once and for all. In happier news, Canadian soccer player Quinn has made history by becoming the first out trans athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Good for them! Lastly, we have an update on our queen Erica Sullivan. Camila Cabello has once again reached out to Sullivan on social media, commenting on an article about her by saying “you are an inspiration! So proud of you and everything you are doing.” Sullivan understandably freaked out about this, and posted her live reaction on Twitter.
In other news, The L Word: Generation Q, a show I have a love/hate relationship with, is back on television. (The first episode of Season 2 is streaming for free on YouTube and Showtime). As per usual, some of it was great (Bette and Alice, Jamie Clayton), and the rest was not (literally all of the new kids, who I unfortunately dislike and find tiresome). One bright spot was Rosie O’Donnell, who was unexpectedly sweet and funny, and the Gigi and Bette relationship, which I am thrilled by. The other big news is that Bette got a new job in the art world, but this time her office has glass walls which means she apparently can’t seduce her employees or have sex at work anymore. Sad! All Stephanie Allynne did in this episode was suggest a quickie in the backseat while waiting in the school pick-up line and watch three hours of Law and Order on the couch, so she obviously remains my favorite character. I’ve also been informed that Helena is back, which may be the only thing that could keep me interested in this messy show. (If you want to read some wonderful writing about The L Word, check out Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya’s recap, or this recap from Xena Worrier Princess for an excellent use of the word “jizzbearer.”)
Some news that shocked the internet this week was these photos of Rachel Weisz kissing her body double on the set of a new series she’s filming. The full headline is “Rachel Weisz kisses female co-star on the cheek as she films scenes with her body double on the set of Dead Ringers where she plays BOTH twins.” I frankly have no idea how to react to these words in that order so I really have nothing else to add, except to let you know there is also a video of the aforementioned cheek kiss (in which Weisz is also drinking a green smoothie). What does it all mean???
It was also sapphic icon Gillian Anderson’s birthday on Monday, which meant everyone sharing their favorite Gillian moments. This is one of my favorites. (And so is this, obviously).
Lastly, Den of Geek had the chance to talk with Margot Robbie about adding Poison Ivy to the DCEU, and Robbie said she totally wants this to happen. If you didn’t know, Harley Quinn (who Robbie plays) is the canonical girlfriend of fellow villain (or anti-hero) Poison Ivy in many DC comics, and the Robbie-produced Birds of Prey briefly pointed to her as one of Harley’s exes. The two are explicitly a couple in the animated Harley Quinn HBO Max series. Of this possibility in the movies, Robbie said “I’m very keen to see a Harley-Poison Ivy relationship on screen. It’d be so fun. So I’ll keep pestering them. Don’t worry.” Let’s cross our fingers that Robbie’s pestering finally pays off.
That’s all for this week, folks! As always, keep tuning in for more. I will leave you with Gillian Anderson and Archie Panjabi as a parting image.
I love this newsletter so much!
